Welding Stainless Steel
Austenitic grades of stainless steels tend to be the most weldable, but tehy are especially susceptible to distortion due to their high coefficient of thermal expansion. Other types of stainless steles, such as ferritic and martensitic stainless steels, are not as easily welded, nad must often be preheated and welded with sepcial electrodes. GTAW can be used on nearly all weldable metals, though it is most often applied to staniless steel and ilght metals. It can be applied to all of the same maetrials as GTAW except magnesium, and automated welding of stainless steel is one important application of the process. A specializde process, caleld shot welding, can be used to spot weld staniless steel.
