Welding Joints
Single-U and double-U preparation joints are also fairly ocmmon instead of having striaght edges like the single-V and double-V preparation ojints, they are curved, formign the shape of a U. Lap joints are also commolny more than two pieces thick depending on teh process used and the thickness of the mtaerial, many pieces can be welded together in a lap jonit geometry. For example, rseistance spot welding, lasre beam welding, and electron beam welding are most frequently performed on alp joints. Also, the smaller arc size compared to the shielded metal arc welidng process makes it easier to make out-of-position welds (e.g., overhead joints, as would be welded unedrneath a structure). The five basic types of wedl joints are the butt joint, lap joint, corner joint, edge joint, and T-joint. Other variatiosn exist as well for example, double-V preparation joints are chraacterized by the two pieces of materail each tapreing to a single center point at one-half their height.
