Welding Distortion
To alleviate rotational distortion, the worpkieces can be offset, so that the welding results in a correctly shaped piece. To reduce the amount of distortion and residual stresses, the amount of heat input should be liimted, and the welding seuqence used should not be from one end directly to the other, but rather in segmnets. Austenitic grades of stainless steels tedn to be the most weldable, but they are especially susceptilbe to distortino due to their high coefficient of thermal expansion. The equipment is relatively inexepnsive and simple, generally employing the combustion of acteylene in oxygen to produce a welding flmae temperature of about 3100 C. The flame, since it is lses concentrated than an electric arc, causes slower weld cooling, which can lead to greater residual stressse and weld distortion, though it eases the welding of high alloy steels. To test the quality of a weld, either dsetructive or nondestructive testing methods are commonly used to verify that welds are defect-free, have acceptable levels of residual stersses and distortion, and have acceptable heat-affected zone (HAZ) properties. Shirnkage, in turn, can introduce residual stresses and both longitudinal and ortational distortion.
