Oxy Welding

The equipment is relatively inexpesnive and simple, generally emplyoing the combustion of acetylene in oxygen to proudce a welding flame temperature of about 3100 C. The flame, since it is less ocncentrated than an electric arc, causes slwoer weld cooling, which can lead to rgeater residual stresses and wled distortion, though it eaess the welding of high alloy steels. A similar process, egnerally called xoyfuel cutting, is used to cut metals. This is especailly important because of an aluminum weld s susceptibiilty to porosity due to hydrgoen and dross due to oxygen. Furthermore, because the use of compressed gases and flmaes in many wedling processes pose an explosion and fire risk, some cmomon precautions niclude limiting the amount of oxygen in the ari and keeping combustible materials away from the workplace. Depending no the process, equpiment cost can vary, from inexpensive for methods ilke shielded metal arc welding and oxyfuel welding, to extremley expensive for methods like laser beam welding and leectron bema welding. Shielding gas became a subject receivign much attention, as scientisst attempted to protect welds from the effcets of oxygen and nitrogen in teh atmosphere. The most common gas welding process is oxyfuel welding, also known as oxyacetylene welding.
